The brain stem, specifically the pons and medulla oblongata, is sensitive to carbon dioxide. Having too much carbon dioxide in the blood will trigger your brain stem to breathe. By removing carbon dioxide from the blood through deep breathing, this impulse to breathe from the brain stem is lowered.
Furthermore, by systematically and deeply breathing in and out, the pH-value in the blood increases (making the blood more alkaline) whereas the acidity lessens. Normally, on average the pH-value is 7.4. By exerting the breathing techniques, this becomes significantly higher and can even go up to 7.75. As a result, 3 important physiological changes happen:
You can experience lightheadedness, as the arteries and veins to the brain and body close slightly in reaction to the alkalizing blood. You can experience a tingling sensation in the limbs and muscles, due to the lowering of the available calcium ions in the blood. Removing free calcium ions increases muscle excitability.
This might sound scary, but this mild hypoxic state caused by the controlled deep breathing is soon back to normal again. At the final deep breath, breathing out and holding the breath will allow the blood to re-establish acidity and allow red blood cells to begin releasing their oxygen. Whilst holding the breath, no new oxygen comes back into the blood. As a result, oxygen saturation in the blood lowers and lowers as the body uses it up. Remember, there is also less carbon dioxide which makes the breath holding easier as well!
Another interesting physiological effect of the breathing method is the increased level of adrenaline in the blood. The Radboud study recorded such large amounts of adrenaline in its participants, it is speculated that the breathing method had an influence on the adrenal medulla, located in the adrenal gland. This is one of the most abundant sources of adrenaline in the body and given the elevated levels the study recorded in the participants, it would make sense the breathing method had an influence over this important sympathetic response. An influence we didn\\'t think was possible before the Radboud study!
The outcomes of these studies confirm that Wim and other participants are able to voluntary influence their autonomic nervous system, something that was thought impossible until then. Currently several studies are conducted that further explore the effects of the Wim Hof Method in areas as brain activity, metabolic activity, inflammation, and pain.
His abilities center around the idea that he can control aspects of his autonomic nervous system (ANS). Your ANS is typically thought to be outside of your conscious control and involves activities such as breathing, digestion, and temperature regulation.
The technique can produce a variety of side effects like tingling throughout your body, especially in your fingers and toes, and dizziness. In rare cases, you may even feel faint or lose consciousness.
The Wim Hof technique promises impressive benefits and comes packed with plenty of witness-based testimony. But most of these claims have not been verified in controlled scientific studies. Tests and trials are ongoing, so more evidence for or against the technique will likely be published.
The pediatrician had conducted other research on the way the human body reacts to extreme temperatures. When he heard about a man who sits in buckets of ice cubes for hours at a time and walks up the Himalayas like it was a summer stroll through a wine vineyard, he was intrigued.
Musik found that, when exposed to cold, Hof activates a part of the brain that releases opioids and cannabinoids into the body. These components can inhibit the signals responsible for telling your body you are feeling pain or cold, and trigger the release of dopamine and serotonin. The result, Musik says, is a kind of euphoric effect on the body that lasts for several minutes.
Rather than being a study of brain over body, the research really parallels other work on how mental training of a particular skill can prompt changes in the brain, says Magda Osman, an associate professor of experimental psychology at the University of London. One study in 2006 looked into the brains of London taxi drivers compared to bus drivers. Taxi drivers had more grey matter in their hippocampus, which is the center of hand-eye coordination skills, ostensibly due to a higher level of navigational skills.
However, while Hof's method may work for short periods in terms of tricking the mind into ignoring extreme cold, it is less clear how the technique might help human bodies resist the physical effects that one might expect from climbing snowy mountains in shorts. (Nor does it explain being able to survive in the desert without water.)

This may sound strange, but the thing that helped the most was being near Wim. He has a powerful understanding of how the mind and body work and it really opened my mind to what was possible when I was seeing it in person.
After the training, I started studying breathing physiology and yoga more in depth. I still do the breathing (but not everyday) but the whole experience gave me a much deeper understanding of my body and more control over it as a result.
Great interview. I have two questions regarding the breathing technique. In the beginning of the podcast, Wim said you lie on the ground and later on he said he personally does it in bed upon waking. Has Wim noticed any additional benefit to doing it on the ground I remember reading on [Moderator: link removed] that the practice of grounding (being barefoot on the ground) allows the body to gather up electrons which bolster the immune system.
Also, Anthony Robbins had mentioned in his works that deep breathing stimulates the lymphatic system and by doing so you better facilitate the removal of toxins from the body and strengthen the immune system. Does Wim have anything further to say on this
Very smooth interview and curious to know from you, Tim, what techniques you have for quickly building rapport prior to each of your interviews, as this one felt like you and Wim have been buds for awhile. QOTD- I find anyone who can run (and finish) ultra-marathons to be impressive and hope to accomplish one myself. As I get the feeling that there is probably more mental preparation that goes into it versus physical.
5. Keep a daily journal of what you eat, but I think more importantly, record how you feel. (Energy levels, mood, etc.) Because if you stick to diet for a length of time and you feel horrible the entire time(more than 3 weeks), then might be time to try something else.
If forced to prescribe a title to Wim, modern/western Guru seems to be a good fit. Which makes this a fantastic conversation about mediation to listen in on, given the very mechanical and physiological angle Wim takes on the subject.
And while Wim is mostly concerned with physiological aspects(e.g. blood acidity), on previously podcasts with leading neuroscientists(Harris and Gazzaley), when the subject of mediation is breached, they make little to no mention of what Wim talks about. So it would be super interesting to connect those dots.
