For the 4th installment of Runners WhoRead, we will be reading Running For My Life by Lopez Lomong. In this inspiringmemoir, Lomong chronicles his journey from one of the Lost Boys of Sudan to theUS Olympic Team. His story begins in South Sudan in the midst of Sudan's secondcivil war which took place from 1985-2005. Tensions between the primarilyIslamic North Sudan which held the governmental majority and the melting pot ofChristians, indigenous religions, and atheists of South Sudan who (though theylacked government representation) controlled many of the country's natural resourcescame to a boil when North Sudan attempted to take control of an oil field thatstraddled the border of both regions and declare all of Sudan to be an IslamicState. In response, the Southern People's Liberation Army rose up toreestablish an autonomous South Sudan and fighting commenced. As a result, manychildren were displaced, orphaned, abducted, or conscripted to war (linkto citation for more info). The term \"Lost Boys\" refers to a group of over20,000 South Sudanese boys (the war primarily took place in the South) whomanaged to flee to refugee camps in Kenya and Ethiopia, of which Lomong is one.
We are reminded of just how remarkable his journey hasbeen when he recounts finally achieving his goal of graduating from college. Inthat final chapter, he goes back through the entire journey from the killingfields of Sudan through writing with a stick in the dirt of Kakuma, graduatinghigh school in America on time, and finally coming back every off season tofinish his classes, to emphasize the point that anything is possible. In hiswords, \"If Lopez Lomong can go from a rebel prison camp to college graduate, socan they [other lost boys and girls]. I know beyond a shadow of a doubt thatanything is possible. That's not just for me, but for anyone who is willing towork hard and let nothing stand in the way of reaching their dreams,\" (pg# 273).Whenever I start to think that my goals are impossible or out of reach, I'llthink back on this story and be encouraged.
Lost Boys of Sudan is an Emmy-nominated feature-length documentary that follows two Sudanese refugees on an extraordinary journey from Africa to America. Orphaned as young boys in one of Africa's cruelest civil wars, Peter Dut and Santino Chuor survived lion attacks and militia gunfire to reach a refugee camp in Kenya along with thousands of other children. From there, remarkably, they were chosen to come to America. Safe at last from physical danger and hunger, a world away from home, they find themselves confronted with the abundance and alienation of contemporary American suburbia.
Another common complaint about dubbing is the mismatch between auditory and visual content. Dubbed lines of a film or show fail to correspond to the lip movements of characters, which some find distracting or unpleasant. Akul Goyal (10), an avid watcher of Bollywood movies, uses subtitles to fill in the gaps between his knowledge of Hindi. Though he acknowledges that subtitles can be challenging to follow, he considers them a better option than dubbing.
Although the character appeared previously in Barrie's book The Little White Bird, the play and its novelisation contain the story of Peter Pan mythos that is best known. The two versions differ in some details of the story, but have much in common. In both versions Peter makes night-time calls on the Darlings' house in Bloomsbury,[4] listening in on Mrs. Mary Darling's bedtime stories by the open window. One night Peter is spotted and, while trying to escape, he loses his shadow. On returning to claim it, Peter wakes Mary's daughter, Wendy Darling. Wendy succeeds in re-attaching his shadow to him, and Peter learns that she knows many bedtime stories. He invites her to Neverland to be a mother to his gang, the Lost Boys, children who were lost in Kensington Gardens. Wendy agrees, and her brothers John and Michael go along.
In the end, Wendy decides that her place is at home, much to the joy of her heartsick mother. Wendy then brings all the boys but Peter back to London. Before Wendy and her brothers arrive at their house, Peter flies ahead, to try and bar the window so Wendy will think her mother has forgotten her. But when he learns of Mrs. Darling's distress, he bitterly leaves the window open and flies away. Peter returns briefly, and he meets Mrs. Darling, who has agreed to adopt the Lost Boys. She offers to adopt Peter as well, but Peter refuses, afraid they will \"catch him and make him a man.\" It is hinted that Mary Darling knew Peter when she was a girl, because she is left slightly changed when Peter leaves.
The play's subtitle \"The Boy Who Wouldn't Grow Up\" underscores the primary theme: the conflict between the innocence of childhood and the social responsibility of adulthood. Peter has chosen not to make the transition from one to the other, and encourages the other children to do the same. However, the opening line of the novel, \"All children, except one, grow up\", and the conclusion of the story indicates that this wish is unrealistic, and there is an element of tragedy in the alternative.[14][page needed]

Another relatively lightweight sketch film from Eric Rohmer (1994)shot, like the 1986 Four Adventures of Reinette and Mirabelle, in 16-millimeter. The three sketches all involve romantic meetings in public places, bridged by a cornball singer and accordion player; their charm lies in the Paris exteriors and the unknown but adept youthful cast. Though the stories are all well crafted, the film seems slighter and a bit more smug than most other Rohmer pictures. In French with subtitles. 100 min. (JR) Read more
These films and others like them gave me a space apart where I was privileged to absorb secrets no one in my world knew (which, to a lost teen, was nothing less than life preserving). They confirmed in me a sense that the world was not as we were told, nor was ours the single most exceptional way of living on Earth.
