Very hard question. I am not a certified behaviorist and you might want to seek one out. I think you are still in early days and you need to let the shock and trauma wash away a little more before making a full evaluation. I think time will tell and most likely heal these psychological wounds. There are many approaches to restoring an animals trust, but I would research them and if possible consult a behaviorist. If all else fails, there are many cheap anti anxiety drugs you can give that would probably help. Good luck.
2 Years ago my dog was attacked amd left her paralyzed from her two back legs i took her to the vet and they told me she had like a 30 % chance she will walk again after that i took her to a lady i found out that she has rescued soany animals she told me that my dog will be able to walk again and she will help me . I had to leave her with this lady until one day i had to pick my dog up because she was to depressed but when i brought her home she wasnt anymore she seemed happy very playful even in he condition she was in this lady still treated her but a cast on my dog for a month or so and then she took it off this lady never camr back to help so i thought my dog will be ok now but she still wasnt able to walk . A lot of people told me to put her down but i just couldnt do something like that i saw my dog and she looked happy she was they same playful dog she was before the accident but now i think to myself i should of done it i shouldve put her down . She doesnt live with me but when i see her i just feel so bad ..What do you think i should of done ?or what can i do now ?
I am very sorry you lost your dogs but every time I hear some one say they couldnt keep a pet and have it to the humane society i want to shake the STUPID out of them. ? YOUR dog is no different than the 30,00 being killed every single DAY in almost every shelter nation wide ,every one is cute every one is a good dog and every one is traumatized by being abandoned . these animals are innocent victims of complacency and denial of the truth about our shelter system YOUR DOG i am ashamed to tell you was most likely euthanized before you had time to drive your car home , they have a 1 in 600 chance of getting adopted and even less if its an older dog or shows any amount of behavir issues usually caused from being DUMPED by their family in a place that is scary and smells like death , ITS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to KNOW THE REALTY of our shelter system , its BROKEN and unless you can KEEP an animal FOR ITS ENTIRE LIFE DONT GET ONE , its that simple
I forgot to add that dogs will occasionally have conflicts with each other and its usually just establishing rank and usually harless, females tend to not get along with other females and for the sake of harmony its always a good idea to pair males with a female if your gonna have more than one dog , otherwise you need to treat them both equally not favoring one over the other and keep them emotionally balanced healthy fed and exercised to prevent boredom or issues will arise, they need human interaction thats what we designed the domestic dog for and they evolved to be our companions not lawn ornaments or stuffed animals that arent allowed to be themselves .they thrive on routine and its important to understand there body language , if left to themselves too much in a multi pet environment they will revert to their wild origins , society has done the dog a great dis service they deserve better from their families
what should I do? I would die if shih poo got killed. I also go away sometimes for 5 days or so a few times a year with work and to see family and a friend takes care of all the animals. THe dogs run around together as always on my acre in the day and when I am gone I keep them in the pens with their apartments
Most likely not a one off. I will be the first to admit I am not an expert in animal behavior but it seems like her protective maternal instincts are kicking in and this will be a long time change. I would try to speak with a local animal behaviorist and see if there are exercises you can do to improve this. Until you get this aggression under control I would avoid mixing with other dogs. It is not worth the risk. All all dogs neutered? If not that might be step one. There are behavior drugs you can try too if all else fails. Good luck!
Morally and by law I always recommend a vet. No offense to anyone who has worked with animals, but unless you are vet or a very good human trauma doctor the level of injury is almost never apparent until it is too late. There might be abdominal punctures? There might be under the skin injury? I think amoxicillin at 500mg is way over dosed and not the best drug at all for the job. Tramadol at 50mg is also slightly over the highest dose level I am comfortable with and might not be sufficient for severe pain. Please take him to a vet and get better antibiotics at the correct dose, and have his wounds looked at. They might even need to sedate him to do this at this late point. The stray also needs to be quarantined as you do not know its vaccine status and it just bit your dog. I would get a rabies booster if you are in a rabies endemic area and consider getting the stray its shots just to be safe. Remember, no good deed goes unpunished. God luck.
Unfortunately I do not have any Magic bullets for this. Keeping your dog calm and inside for a few days then slowly starting your normal regiment might help. There are anti anxiety drugs but this is really a short term fix. You can call a local animal behavior vet but I think time will be your best tool. See how she looks after another week. Make sure she is not hurting somewhere.
Sorry for the late reply, I was on vacation away from a computer. Rosita I honestly do not have time to explain the whole process, but your vet is correct. There is rabies in cold climates just as much as hot climates. It is a matter of contact with rabid animals and vaccination protocols. If there are many rabid animals the outbreak will get worse very fast and fail to get better until vaccines or traps are effective. Climate is irrelevant for rabies.
Very sorry to hear about your loss. It sounds like with limited veterinary care there were not too many options. There are a few things to be concerned about. Was she adequately hydrated after the injury enough to take her out of shock? It sounds like her temperature was appropriate so maybe she was. I would be worried that she needed more IV fluids. We like to keep these animals on IV fluids for many hours and with large volumes. The double chin and swelling in her neck is also a concern. It sounds like she could breath well enough, but maybe she has a damaged throat that continued to swell and cause major problems. Internal injuries are also a concern. Maybe whatever got to her really shook her and caused major internal damage (or brain stem damage). I really can not say without having seen her, but it sounds like she was VERY injured and maybe a trip to the city might not have even saved her. Sometimes the injuries are so bad that there is nothing you can do. It sounds like the vet there did everything possible (very well even), and maybe the only thing more would have been more IV fluids and a check to see if she was septic (systemic body infection) or internally bleeding (blood counts) or in DIC (multi organ shut down, checked with a blood count.) HOWEVER, if she had any of these problems, even the city might have a hard time saving her. These are also quite advanced tests and might not be possible in your area. It is a very sad situation and you did everything you could and should have done for her. You should feel good about that.
It is the morning now, I assume you have taken him to the vet. Sounds like he might have been shaken, like picked up and shaken and done some real damage. Nothing I can tell you without seeing him except that he needs a vet. Labored breathing is a bad sign for any animal. Good luck.
I can not really understand what is happening, but it sounds like dog dog aggression which is hard to treat without behavior therapy and changing the environment. I am not an expert on animal behavior. Sorry.
My 3 y/o Lab I rescued attacked my carin terrier completely unprovoked. The carin terrier has extensive bite wounds and thanks to the ASPCA NYC animal hospital, he had surgery and I was able to bring him home tonight. He has 4 drains but on his back I feel subcutaneous emphysema. He ate and urinated, Is this part of the healing process or should I reach out the animal hospital ?
DOg behavior is not easy and you need to keep them separated until you feel 100% confident that you can prevent this in the future. You can and should contact an animal behavior specialist for advice. The vet should have recommended what was needed for your little dog as I cant tell you without seeing hi. Good luck. 2b1af7f3a8
