This is a sourced index of commercial, indie and freeware space flight simulation games. The list is categorized into four sections: space flight simulators, space flight simulators with an added element of combat, space combat simulators with an added element of trading, and unreleased space flight simulators.
A space flight simulator game is software that allows the operator to experience spacecraft space flight in outer space with the added elements of gameplay. There are many different types of simulators. These simulators range in purpose from pure simulation to sheer entertainment. Space flight occurs beyond the Earth's atmosphere, and space flight simulators feature the ability to roll, pitch, and yaw. Space flight simulators use flight dynamics in a free environment; this free environment lets the spacecraft move within the three-dimensional coordinate system or the x, y, and z (applicate) axis.
Endless Sky is a 2D space trading and combat game similar to the classic Escape Velocity series. Explore other star systems. Earn money by trading, carrying passengers, or completing missions. Use your earnings to buy a better ship or to upgrade the weapons and engines on your current one. Blow up pirates. Take sides in a civil war. Or leave human space behind and hope to find friendly aliens whose culture is more civilized than your own.
Human space is a network of two hundred star systems, most of them inhabited, joined by hyperspace links. No one really understands how the hyperdrive works or how the links were initially created, but they say that the strange aliens who live down at the edge of the Rim have other means of travel that allow them to visit other parts of the galaxy.
A merchant captain can earn a living by buying cheap food and luxury goods from the poorer parts of the galaxy and trading it for medical supplies or electronics on richer worlds. But you can often earn a better income by taking on special jobs. The more cargo space you have in your fleet, and the higher your combat reputation grows, the more jobs become available to you.
Once you've paid off your mortgage (or qualified for a bigger one) it's time to think about buying a better ship, either to build a fleet or to replace your flagship. About 50 different models of ships are available in human territory, anything from massive freighters to powerful warships to quick, nimble scoutships. And, every once in a while you hear rumors that people have traveled beyond known space and discovered alien civilizations with technology far superior to your own.
To really make your mark in the galaxy, you'll have to choose which factions to side with, both in human space and beyond. Only one major story line has been written so far, allowing you to take part in a rebellion that reshapes human space. Endless Sky is designed to make it as easy as possible to create new content to add to the game, and people are hard at work on other story lines, as well as new alien species, ships, and outfits.

And leave they did, forgetting their ravaged world and spreading across the galaxy like a plague. There was so much space for them to live in that they simply ran out of reasons to fight and for the first time in human history they were truly at peace.
An unknown alien force who decided the human race had no right to occupy so much space. Space that they had claimed as their own many centuries earlier. The humans were unlike them, they did not speak their language or share their beliefs, so the aliens did not see any reason to negotiate. The space the humans occupied was their's, so they had to be removed.
I think the only feedback I received was about the lack of background. It was just a basic starfield. Well, your wish is my command. I've re-written this thing with some fantastic new backgrounds! Each of them is a work of art, and I've also added lighting effects so the ships are lit by the suns in the background with different colours and intensity. So now when you register you don't just get access to all the great new ships, but you also get access to all these awesome new backgrounds. Check it out! If you have the full version with more than one background installed the background will change each time a ship travels to a new area of space thru hyperspace. Which I think is very cool!
So I decided to re-write it from scratch using some great new space ships made by a very talented artist. They look better than any of the old ships, and by re-writing the screen saver I've been able to make it so much more like what I originally envisioned all those years ago.
I'm hoping to add a heap of ships available for download from the website (there's already quite a few) so keep checking back for more. There's a mix of big motherships and small space fighters, some with different weapons and some with shields. I've tried to make it versatile so I can add a load of different ships, and I'm thinking of adding things like cloaking devices and stuff in future versions.
v1.0 - 13th July, 2006 - Original Release Space ships do battle in a dogfight in deep space! Ships chase their enemies, but avoid firing on their comrades. Ships take damage and explode into pieces. Some ships have shields, which absorb damage until they're depleted. Motherships patrol the area as well as small star fighters Additional space ships available for download to add to the full version.
The magnetic accelerator cannon[2], also referred to as a mass accelerator cannon[1] or MAC, is a type of heavy weapon system employed by humanity, primarily the spacecraft of the United Nations Space Command. Within the UNSC, MACs are defined as a heavy weapon that fires a sizeable ferric-tungsten round at supersonic velocities from the bow of a capital ship, orbital defense platform or mounted driver emplacement.[3] MACs are coilguns employing Asynchronous Linear Induction Motor (ALIM) technology[3] and are typically used in military applications, though similar technology can be used in civilian mass drivers for industrial use.
MACs are capable of firing a wide array of munitions, depending on bore and model. Some MAC rounds are extremely dense and constructed of ferric tungsten[3], noted by Captain Wallace of the frigate UNSC Commonwealth as a \"heavy round\".[7] In the case of the MACs fitted onto the refit-colony ship UNSC Spirit of Fire, the rounds fired from its MACs are \"low-mass\"[8] or consist of three-hundred-ton depleted uranium slugs.[9] The MAC of the Spirit of Fire was later modified in a special project conducted by Ellen Anders, resulting in a specialised MAC capable of firing rounds that emit an EMP upon impact.[10] Other munitions that can be fired from MACs include semi-autonomous drone missiles[11] and for the larger 27 metre guns of UNSC Infinity, even include cargo pods and small spacecraft.[12] A special kind of MAC round fired by the refit-UNSC Pillar of Autumn was composed of a ferrous core and an outer layer of tungsten carbide, which allows the round to splinter on impact with an enemy vessel, similar to the shredder rounds fired by an assault rifle.[13]
As some of the largest and most destructive weapons available to humanity, their use is primarily constricted to space warfare. Most UNSC spacecraft are equipped with some form of spinal MAC, requiring the vessel to manually turn and face the target it wishes to fire on. MAC rounds are often fired in concentrated volleys by fleets of coordinated warships, and used as a long-ranged weapon for \"sniping\" enemy ships out of the sky. During the war against the Covenant, human MAC volleys were often fired in concentration, aiming to overload a target ship's energy shielding.
In select circumstances, MACs can be employed in atmospheres or for the purposes of orbital bombardment. Such orbital bombardment can be deployed against large targets such as enemy warships or bases, or against targets as (relatively) small as a Scarab.[18] During the Battle for Arcadia, the UNSC Spirit of Fire made liberal use of up to forty MAC strikes in rapid succession to destroy a Covenant staging area near the Arcadia ONI facility.[19][Note 2]
MACs are primarily divided into two distinct classifications; light MACs and heavy MACs (also referred to as Light Coil and Heavy Coil). Overall MAC generations are denoted as Marks, with specific models given a unique identifying code. Heavy MACs appear to be typically fitted on mainline fighting vessels such as those of the Autumn-class cruiser and Strident-class heavy frigate, while light MACs are predominantly fitted on lighter warships such as the Charon and Stalwart frigate classes, ships not intended as line warships such as the Epoch class carrier or ships historically considered under-gunned as capital ships, such as the Halcyon-class cruiser. 153554b96e
