A novel algorithm is proposed to calculate the crack tip velocity and the crack tip shape at each time step in the fatigue crack growth process. All crack tip parameters are obtained from the crack tip shape at a given time step. The crack tip is assumed as a R-curve, which is a steepest descent path to the most stable crack tip at a given time step. The length of the R-curve equals the crack length at this time step. The crack opening displacements are found by solving the variational equation. The energy release rate can be found from the intersection of the crack tip with the R-curve. The crack tip velocity can be calculated from the crack tip shape and crack tip parameters. The crack tip shape is reconstructed by storing the crack shape at every step. As a result, the crack tip velocity and the crack tip shape at any time can be found, and crack growth can be simulated.
In this paper, we experimentally investigated the influence of crack deflection on crack growth of a frictional interface. The main objective of this study was to investigate the effect of crack deflection on the crack growth of a frictional interface. The crack length was measured as a function of crack propagation (Lc) with crack deflection angles (alpha = 0-1 degree) induced by increasing the load. The frictional interface was prepared by milling and polishing a polycrystalline copper sample in the presence of a lubricant. The results of the experiment indicated that the crack deflection angle is one of the most important factors in crack growth of the frictional interface.
