The Nautical Almanac has two parts: The Almanac and Supplement. The almanac is the reference for the positions of the stars and planets in the sky. The Supplement provides various information concerning the history of the nautical almanac and the role of the International Astronomical Union. Two other parts of the nautical almanac are the Astronomical Ephemeris and the Equatorial Celestial Sphere. The Astronomical Ephemeris are tables of the positions of the sun and moon. It is an important tool in determining sunrise and sunset times. The Equatorial Celestial Sphere is used to find the angle of elevation of the sun at the horizon and the altitude of the sun at noon. The Equatorial Celestial Sphere is an essential part of a nautical almanac. It is used to find the latitude and longitude of a ship at noon. The Nautical Almanac and the Celestial Sphere are used as reference tables to find the latitude and longitude of a celestial body in the sky.
The Nautical Almanac also gives the exact time of sunrise and sunset and the angle of the sun at the horizon. The information from the Nautical Almanac is used for navigation. The maritime navigator can use a sextant to measure the angles of the sun or the moon to determine the latitude and longitude of a particular body in the sky. The sextant is an essential tool for navigation.
In the past, navigators used tables of star positions and the nautical almanac to determine their positions. With the introduction of the Global Positioning System the Age of Navigation has ended. Using the Global Positioning System helps mariners to pinpoint their locations accurately. www.cruiseanit.ca
