As with many of Parsons' songwriting efforts, the piece is a unique blend of highly orchestrated progressive rock and pop, with numerous elements of jazz fusion and space age sounds. The song was recorded in May 1982 at AIR Studios in London with a session of eighteen musicians, including Phil Collins on drums (who later said that the song was his favorite of the Alan Parsons Project's albums), David Sanborn, and Gary Moore on guitar. Moore played the lead guitar solo on the song, which was performed in the key of E minor. The song's title is a reference to the star Sirius, which is the brightest star in the night sky, located in the constellation of Canis Major.
